She’s usually the woman who husbands
love to hate – and is often called the ‘third wheel’ in a marriage.
However, half of married men have
revealed they find their mother-in-law attractive - and a quarter have a
genuine crush on her, according to a study.
A poll of 1,500 men found that a
cheeky one in six felt their partner’s mum looks better than their other half.
A fifth of men said mother and
daughter have similar styles, according to the study
The research saw the old tradition
of men disliking the mother-in-law fall by the wayside as eight in ten admitted
they had a great relationship with their partner’s mother.
And two thirds of men in
relationships said they would be really happy if their partner aged as well as
her mum.
Meanwhile, a cocky 31 per cent of
the men polled reckon their partner’s mum is secretly attracted to them.
And nearly a fifth (18 per cent)
feels their partner’s mother has even made a subtle come on in the past.
While one in four blokes openly
admits to flirting with their wife’s mum in the past and nearly a third
deliberately wind their partner up a bit by commenting on how attractive her
mum is.
However, the high appeal of the
nation’s mothers is a compliment - four in ten say their partner strongly
resembles her mother in appearance.
While nearly half thought that their
partner’s style and overall clothing taste was heavily influenced by her mum.
A bold one in eight even goes as far
as to say that their mother-in-law is more stylish than their partner when it
comes to dress sense and looking good.
The survey reveals old tradition of
men disliking the mother-in-law fall by the wayside as eight in ten admitted
they had a great relationship with their partner’s mother
And a third of men say their partner
gets her sense of humour from her mum, while nearly a quarter said they
definitely have similar tempers.
When it comes to clothing, a fifth
of men said mother and daughter have similar styles and a love of shopping,
while 31 per cent said the two look very similar in appearances overall.
Psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos,
who worked with Peter Hahn, which specialises in fashion for mature women, on
the study, said: “These findings are really interesting to see - I think
because popular culture is so youth-biased, older adults can feel undervalued,
even unseen.
“Unsurprisingly many women aged 50
and over often lack confidence - when really they should be celebrating their
age and embracing their beauty.
“Many women feel let down by
retailers who seem to only cater for one size and shape- more brands need to
start celebrating the diversity of female beauty.”
A spokesman for Peter Hahn said:
“The results unearthed a strong appreciation for the nation’s mothers and
clearly many mother-in-laws have much of which to be proud.
“It’s easy to pigeonhole older women
and sometimes hard for them to feel sexy or appreciated but this study reveals
how admired so many mother-in-laws actually are, both for their appearances,
style and personality overall.
“The results show many cheeky chaps
have quite the high opinion of their partner’s mother and this goes against the
old cliche of the mother-in-law being a bit of a battle axe.
“Today, women in their fifties,
sixties and beyond are far more stylish than ever before and have a confidence
that clearly makes them feel fabulous at 50.
“Most women would actually take it
as a complement that their mother is thought of as attractive as it’s a great
indication that style runs in the family.”
