RONGO UNIVERSITY STUDENT DIES IN ELECTION CHAOS

A student at Rongo University College died while another one is fighting for his life after fracas caused by elections on Wednesday morning. Chaos started at the college’s main campus in Kitere area after two students’ camp supporting different candidates for college presidency clashed.
Rongo police boss Thomas Ngeiywa says the two camps started fighting before a student only identified as Evans was attacked by a knife by a rival camp. Ngeiywa says he was rushed to the hospital where he is in stable condition.
However, the attack ignited more trouble as students from the two camps further clashed.
The Police boss says the students blocked the Kisii-Migori road setting on fire sugarcane plantation nearby and pelting motorists. Ngeiywa says a student identified as Harun Odhiambo died after he fell in an unused well while running from police officers who had gone to quell the tension.
Five other students also fell in the abandoned well but the deceased was the first to fall and died while undergoing treatment at Kisi hospital.
The police boss says they are liaising with the university administration to investigate what caused the fight and arrest the perpetrators.
