MCA ends year in custody after political differences with MP

Albert Muteshi

Isukha South MCA Herbert Makatiani ended last year on a sour note after he stayed in Kakamega cells for a short time. This was after Shinyalu MP Silverse Lisamula pressed charges against him. The MP is accusing Makatiani of sending youths to disrupt his Khayega market tour about two months ago.
The MCA was arrested last Wednesday December 31 while inspecting a local road near Mukumu market. It took the interventions of Governor Oparanya, MPs Ayub Savula (Lugari), Bernard Shinali (Ikolomani), MCAs Alex Khamasi (nominated, UDF) and Robert Lutatwa (Kambili, UDF) and others before Makatiani was released on bond.
While addressing locals at Khayega immediately he was released from the cells, the furious MCA likened his arrest to “a journey to heaven” which he said was difficult. At the same time, Makatiani was sorry for Shinyalu people for electing Lisamula. He accused the MP of lacking a clear vision for his people. He lamented that the MP should not even have joined politics in the first place because his talent is elsewhere. The MCA condemned the poor status of Khayega-Shinyalu-Ileho road which he blamed on the MP’s lack of responsibility.
Makatiani noted that the road was last time repaired during the former MP Kizito Mugali’s short stint in parliament. He threatened to challenge Lisamula for Shinyalu seat in due course if the MP did not deliver the goods. MCA Alex Khamasi echoed Makatiani’s sentiments that the MP should utilise Kizito Mugali’s CDF balance of Sh42million and Sh84million from the national government to develop Kakamega East; allocate bursaries, youth funds, give the aged their dues, maintain roads among other projects but not to spend more time engaging in personal vendetta political rhetoric.
Activists Majimbo Matwang’a, Allan Nambemba, the ODM county youth leader Geoffrey Mitalo and Bull Fighting chairman Osama called upon the MP to quit Shinyalu seat or leave politics all together because he has failed the people. The bad blood between Makatiani and Lisamula is not new. The focal point has always been the new look of Khayega market. The county government demolished about 100 shops two months ago in order to accomplish the project.
At the same time, Makatiani has called upon the Kakamega governor to speed up the process and start construction of the market immediately “so that those who developed traumatised as a result of demolitions should actually see development being done”, he pleaded. Efforts to get a comment from Michael Amalemba who is the MPs PA regarding the stalemate hit a snag after he failed to answer the call.
