Gor’s green army sets eyes on Kidero for sponsorship

All is not well at Gor Mahia following revelations by their chairman Ambrose Rachier that the club is in serious financial doldrums ahead of their CAF Champions League campaign against Madagascar’s CNaPS.
Fear has gripped the Gor camp with revelations that more players were likely to desert the team for fear of nonpayment of salaries and allowances. Gor’s top management is now appealing to individual sponsors, corporate organisation and the government to come to their aid.  Sources say the name that is in the lips of every Gor player, fan and official is that of Nairobi governor Evans Kidero. It is widely expected that just as during the last session where Gor played without a sponsor, Kidero is being seen as a possible saviour to the national league champion’s dwindling financial fortunes.
It is whispered within the soccer fraternity that Kidero is most likely to bail out the club ahead of the continental assignment. According to the club officials, Gor requires Sh10 million to put their house in order for the home and away match with CNaPS.Rachier last week admitted that the club has serious financial challenges, mainly occasioned by the transfer window since they have been involved in heavy recruitment. He says they will be mainly relying on fundraising from their fans to meet the huge costs, while at the same time pointing out they are not yet close to sealing a deal for a sponsor, even as rumours continue to hit the mills that they are close to agreeing a contract with a multi-million shilling sponsorship.
This will not be the first time Kidero will be coming to the aid of the club. He has been one of the top Gor sponsors dating back to his days as Mumias MD. Last year, he presided over a series of fundraisers for the club and even donated playing kits for the national champions. But even as Kidero gives personal contributions in support of the club, there have been murmurs that Luo Nyanza politicians and professionals have done very little in support of the club. Luo MPs have been conspicuously missing during Gor fundraisers, something that has not gone down well with the green army. Gor fans have been appealing to Luo MPs to emulate Kidero and finance the club or help the club get a sponsor.
