The Government may lose millions of shillings in Oyugis town
following plans by a legislator to mobilise traders against paying
taxes.
Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga has given the county government three months to improve sanitation in the town.
Speaking in Oyugis town when he distributed Uwezo Fund cheques worth
Sh6 million to 56 groups, Mr Magwanga expressed concern over "wanting
sanitation" occasioned by a poor sewerage system.
He argued that Oyugis market was generating millions of shillings in
terms of revenue but the county government was not improving sanitation
in the market.
"Oyugis town generates Sh2.4 million per month hence it should be
considered an important market by doing away with the filth we see here.
This town used to be clean under the management of the defunct local
authority ," Magwanga said.
He said the business community was spending a lot of money on taxes yet they operated under poor health conditions.
THIS SUFFERING
"Our mothers are rained on or stay in the scorching sun as they sell
their goods yet the people who are supposed to take care of that have
forgotten their responsibility. We cannot allow this suffering. We need
modern markets because the revenue collected from this market for only
four months is enough to to do construction," Magwanga said.
He vowed to mobilise traders to stop paying taxes if the Government ignored the ultimatum.
