Prior to him being voted as a parliamentarian in 2007 as the MP for Kipkelion, Magerer Lang’at was politically little known in his home town of Kericho.
But after Raila Odinga fired assistant minister Charles Keter, then the Belgut MP and an ally of Deputy President William Ruto with whom Raila had crossed political swords with, Magerer replaced him.
However, the youthful Kipsigis politician made a blunt political blunder which he will live to regret for the rest of his life when he decided to stay put in ODM as his other Kalenjin brothers and sisters ditched the ODM and joined the Ruto’s URP that ultimately decamped ODM. There is no love lost between the former premier and the DP.
Now, Magerer has been kicked out of ODM unceremoniously. All those who were elected to the August House with him in 2007 retained their seats in 2013. Word has it that the embattled politician is gearing to defect to URP.
Local political pundits in Kericho town and its environs now believe that for Lang’at, it is the end of the road for now.
One MCA in Kericho who wished not to he quoted in the media said the former Kipkellion MP is not the type of person whose relationship with Raila could have lasted longer than one year. Raila, he says, believes and cherishes the politics of deceit.
The forceful removal of Langat from an important ODM meeting by Nairobi MCAs and hired goons which was televised on many stations has since become the subject of discussions in Kericho town. It appeared to have been well taken within the URP rank and file.
There is no sign of any sympathy for the former ODM executive director general among his Kipsigis people. Instead it is being appreciated and enjoyed as the most appropriate action.
“Langat should have sought for advice from those who have worked closely with Raila before him like the DP Ruto and Najib Balala and other seasoned politicians and former members of the defunct ODM Pentagon before taking up the lucrative positionof the director general of ODM,” remarked another former Raila close friend in Kericho who is now an MCA on URP.
