Eyebrows raised at Afya Sacco after AGM

Even before the dust settles after Afya Sacco held its annual general meeting mid lastmonth and officials whose terms had expired were given new mandate for another term of three years ending in 2017, trouble is already looming at giant cooperative society.
The officials elected were Vitalis Lukiri as chairman, SG Kariuki, vice-chairman, GO Otieno, secretary and MN Kariuki, treasurer. Others are board members MN Mutaki, PK Wafula, EM Karichu, P Ochieng’ and PK Kiptoo. Lukiri’s alleged sex exploits are at the centre of discussion among members.
That all is not well at the Sacco is seen when bitter members endorsed a supervisory committee of three members. They are to monitor and report on the work of the management board by conducting regular investigations into the affairs of the society, prepare quarterly reports to the management board and present an annual report to the annual delegates conference.
Word has it that of concern among members is the way officials have amassed wealth in the short period they have been in office.
They are capitalising on membership of about 40,000 with a standing deposit of Sh10 billion to make a killing. Delay of loans to members is of late a grave matter that has agitated many.
It is said that the officials have struck a deal where Afya Sacco opened its doors to non-members as a way of expansion but insiders say the move has seen officials register relatives and friends as members and push for them to get loans.
Initially, Afya Sacco was a members-only society drawing its membership from the health sector.
