KABETE, Kenya, May 4 – Ferdinand Waititu is the Member of the Parliament-elect for Kabete Constituency.
He made a comeback to the National Assembly after
winning Monday’s by-election occasioned by the death of George Muchai,
who was killed alongside his aides after assassins opened fire on his
vehicle on Nairobi’s Kenyatta Avenue.
Waititu garnered 24,228 votes ahead of his nearest competitor, independent candidate George Mungai Waiguru, and Newton Njenga (New Vision Party) who managed 268 and 241 votes respectively.
For Njenga – who has tried to be the area MP since 1997 – it was a fifth time unlucky.
Waititu, a former Embakasi MP and 2013 Nairobi gubernatorial race runner-up, took the lead from the blocks and never looked back, opening a gap of over 10,000 votes by the time the count got to the half-way mark.
Waititu who is not a stranger to clinching by-elections – in 2008 he won the Embakasi poll after incumbent MP Mugabe Were was shot dead had opened an unassailable 20,000 vote lead with 13 centres left, leaving his competitors to compete for the runners-up honours.
The race which also gives the JAP its first victory also saw a surprise twist, with ODM’s Karanja Kamau put up a spirited fight to finish fourth in a field of nine candidates.
