National Land Commission chairman Mohammed Swazuri is eyeing the Msambweni parliamentary seat in Kwale county.
Swazuri is promising to use his influence at the commission to help allies get beach land titles. He is raising millions to run his campaigns.
Sources in the constituency revealed that NLC boss is preparing the ground for 2017 quietly fearing the matter could turn controversial and compromise his coveted position.
However, area MP Suleiman Dori whom reports indicate is aware of Swazuri’s political activities in the constituency has already cautioned him publicly to desist from hiding behind land issues to do politics.
“We Coast MPs are tired of this man Swazuri whom since his appoitment has not been able to solve any serious land issue in the region. What we now see is a person who is filling his home with hundreds of people. If it is politics he wants, let him come on the ground and i will thrush him,” Dori was quoted early last month as having said.
Incidentally, Dori and Swazuri hail from the same Gazi village in Msambweni. But what are the chances if Swazuri eventually enters the fray? Observers in the constituency say the NLC boss candidature would be a formidable one given that it will be well oiled.
It is claimed Swazuri is now a well off man with sufficient resources to fund his campaigns besides the fact that some Mombasa tycoons have reportedly assured him of their support. It is against this background that the MP is a worried man.
However, the interest in the seat by Bongwe/Gombato ward MCA Omar Boga is complicating matters for both Swazuri and Dori. The MCA who is also a top Cord official in Kwale county hails from Diani, a vote rich area that boasts of over 28,000 voters.
Opponents are fearful that Boga is well grounded politically as he enjoys support across the board in the cosmopolitan Diani. Sources claim the MP is uncomfortable after Boga started consolidating his support from other areas in the constituency through the network of his fellow MCAs.
Even though there are other aspirants who will emerge as the clock ticks towards 2017, already there is talk that the contest has shaped into a three-horse race.
