IN a bizarre case of sexual assault, a 70-year-old Chinhoyi man raped
his 17-year-old daughter-in-law and cut incisions on her buttocks,
thighs, between her breasts and below her navel while claiming
fulfilment of his cultural obligations.

The senior citizen rapist was last week slapped with a 15-year jail term by Chinhoyi regional magistrate Never Katiyo, who described the old man as “a menace to society”.
“The accused is an uncivilised man who belongs to the pre-stone age and has no place in our modern society where the girl child ought to be respected,” Katiyo said.
“One wonders why the accused wants this court to be lenient with him when he actually had the guts to, first of all, divorce his wife before drooling on his son’s wife and bedding her.”
“That’s disgusting, and as if that was not enough, he went on to cut incisions on her buttocks, thighs, between her breasts and below her navel, that was very traumatic to the complainant and she will leave with it the rest of her life,”
The rapist, however, was eventually slapped with a 13-year effective jail term after the magistrate took into account his age and suspended two years on condition of good behaviour.
The circumstances of the matter were that sometime in November last year, the complainant was alone at their homestead where she had been left to prepare food for other family members that were working in the fields.
As she went about her chores, the court heard, she got into one of the huts to collect mealie-meal. But while inside, her father-in-law suddenly entered the room and closed the door behind him.
The court heard, he then placed an axe near the door and a knife on the floor before pushing his daughter-in-law to the ground whereupon he had sexual intercourse with her once without her consent.
After the act, the court heard, the rapist ordered his daughter-in-law to remain lying down, took out his razor blade and cut incisions on the woman’s buttocks, thighs, between her breasts and below her navel.
Thereafter he then mixed some crushed herbs with the woman’s blood and informed her that he had followed part of his culture which was meant to ensure her peaceful living with her husband.
After the incident the woman fled the homestead, reported the rape to her mother and eventually to the police, leading to the man’s arrest.
