Police in Nandi South have arrested an amorous businessman who lured a mentally retarded 12-year-old school girl and allegedly infected her with the dreaded HIV/Aids virus.
The Mpesa agent who operates at Kemeloi trading centre has already resorted to threatening those attempting to assist the vulnerable child claiming that their efforts will reach nowhere as he has reached out to some key and influential people at Kapsabet Lawcourts to derail the case.
The victim is a Class Five student at Kemeloi Day Primary School while her 30-year-old assailant is a village arrogant who has kept a chain of concubines and widows after his wife fled from their matrimonial home on learning that he had infected her with the disease.
Accounts from witnesses who recorded statements with the police recounted how the girl’s elder brother who is in Class Eight, abruptly checked into her room to borrow writing materials for his homework when he found the room empty.
The statements seen by the press show how the girl was confronted by relatives in the morning to state where she had spent the previous night and how an administration police constable moved quickly to arrest the culprit and handed him to the police for possible prosecution.
The police took her to hospital for medical examination which revealed that she had been infected with HIV, a fact that sent neighbours raving mad with anger, baying for the culprit’s blood.
The victim and her three siblings currently stay with their paternal aunt in the village after her mother died 12 years ago due to birth complications.
The four children went through hard times for two years with their father after their mother’s demise until they were pronounced total orphans following their father’s death in a tragic road accident.
