FIRE DESTROYS SCHOOL

Property estimated at Sh3million was destroyed after fire razed down a dormitory at St Francis Kanja Secondary School in Embu East sub-county on Wednesday night. Police are hunting for three students who had been suspended two days earlier and were found roaming near the school fence shortly before the sudden fire.

The fire started at around 7.30pm when students were in the dining hall for their supper, according to area Administration Police Commandant Charles Machinji. Machinji said there were no injuries from the inferno that reduced to ashes a dorm that housed 80 students.

He said an Embu County Government fire engine was dispatched to put out the fire but arrived when all property had been burnt. He said the three students who are the main suspects had been sent home after being found with alcohol two days earlier but were found near the school fence on Wednesday evening and threatened watchmen who confronted them.

"Investigations are underway to establish the actual cause," he said. Machinji said students had burnt a part of the same dorm last year but which had since been repaired. He called for people of goodwill to assist the affected students who lived in the dorm and who lost all their property.
